She said this on the Today show recently on her book tour of “All That Is Bitter and Sweet.” I listen to country music sometimes on the radio, and even the country songs about dysfunctional alcoholic families seem to be upbeat or humorous. I’ve heard some sad country music, but are there any…tragic country songs?

I believe Ashley Judd is referring to the older “honk-tonk” country songs. Everything today is very upbeat. If you’re interested, look into: *Hank Williams, *George Jones, *The Carter Family, *Ernest Tubb,, *Ray Price, Buck Owens, Conway Twitty, Ferlin Husky, Loretta Lynn, and the list goes on.
