I am planning to go but I was wondering if you can use the annual tickets instead of buying a mardi gras ticket.

yes. if you have an annual pass, mardi gras is included! i know because i have an annual pass and have used it. also check their website (universalorlando.com) because there are even special areas for pass holders to see the parade.
