Want a Vertical Leap Like Michael Jordan? Let's See Just How High He Can Jump
Michael Jordan is perhaps the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball. So what made him so great? Well, his 48″ vertical jump didn’t hurt. In fact, Michael Jordan’s vertical leap gave him a significant advantage over his competition. He could easily pull down rebounds, raise up to block shots, and throw down some powerful dunks. I can’t promise you that you will be dunking like Jordan, but if you implement the proper training program you CAN significantly increase your vertical leap.
The major muscles involved when a person jumps are the quads, hamstrings, and the lower back. Most people think that the calves play the biggest part in your vertical jump, but they are wrong. What, you don’t believe me then test it out for yourself.
Stand completely flat footed and without bending you knees jump up as high as possible. Hmmm…you didn’t jump very high did you? That’s because you are only using your calve muscles. Now do the same thing with a deep knee bend and you will jump much higher because you are using much larger muscle groups.
In reality the quads, hamstrings and glutes are responsible for about 80% of your leaping power. So it would make sense to base the majority of our training on these muscle groups. Here are a few exercises that I recommend…
Squats – Squats are BY FAR the best overall exercise that you can do to help you improve your vertical jump. Just think about the squat motion in general. It closely resembles the motion you use when you are preparing to jump. It hits all the right muscle groups as well. So make sure you incorporate HEAVY squats into your workouts.
Sprints – Running the 50 and 100 yard dash will build your leg muscles, increase your speed, and help your vertical. If sprinting on flat land becomes too easy, change it up with some hill sprints.
Jumping rope – Getting proficient at jumping rope will improve your reflexes and cardiovascular system. Once you have mastered the rope, add ankle weights to increase the difficulty.
Box Jumps – An excellent plyometric exercise which can help you to quickly see results. Jump onto and off of a tall box or bench.
Heel and Toe touches – Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Jump as high as you can and bring your heels toward your butt. As you are in the air touch your toes. Land, jump again, and then your heels.
Another area that is often neglected is a person’s form when they are jumping. It is very common to receive a 3 or 4 inch immediate increase in your vertical jump by simply implementing the right jumping techniques. So how can I say this? Well, I have seen it in myself.

Dealing With Perfectionism
Perfectionism can be a virtue in the pursuit of excellence and mastery, but it may also have a dark side, with unhealthy obsessions or chronic dissatisfaction getting in the way of creative imagination, healthy relationships and life satisfaction.
Two examples: Filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer has been called a relentless perfectionist, someone who never allows a single detail to go by without notice. Martha Stewart calls herself a maniacal perfectionist and says if she weren’t, she wouldn’t have her huge multimedia company.
Psychologist Stephen A. Diamond, Ph.D. thinks that without perfectionism, we would not have the number of ventures we consider extraordinary and excellent, outstanding or great.
But perfectionism is not always a virtue, and it can affect how controlling we get about our lives and interactions with other people.
Actor Michelle Pfeiffer considers herself a perfectionist, but admits she can drive herself mad – and other people, too. But she thinks it is one of the reasons for her success, because she really cares about what she does and strives to get it right.
But another artist renowned (and often condemned) for her perfectionism, Barbra Streisand warns that we have to accept imperfections in ourselves, and in others. She notes it’s part of the beauty of life that nothing can be perfect.
Actor Ashley Judd entered a treatment program in 2006 to overcome lifelong emotional problems, and learned she was using sleep to deal with uncomfortable feelings and that her habit of wiping down plastic surfaces on planes and hotels was all about control, a big part of perfectionism.
Now, she says, it helps to be aware that engaging in perfectionism is a form of abusing herself.
In her book Never Good Enough, Monica Ramirez Basco, Ph.D. writes that when you think you keep falling short, feel criticized by others, or cannot get others to cooperate in doing something the way you think it “should” be done, you can end up inflicting negative attitudes and emotions on both yourself and others.
She describes cognitive-behavioral methods for controlling the distress associated with perfection, to identify, evaluate, and change the underlying beliefs that affect how we may respond to events and interact with others.
This can be a powerful approach to dealing with perfectionism. Part of it is becoming aware of the beliefs you have about striving to “do things right” in a compulsive way, and not allowing for “imperfect” to be okay.
Dr. Basco lists some potential beliefs to examine, such as: “If I make a mistake, it will be horrible”; “I must be perfect or others will disapprove of me” and “If I do it perfectly, then everyone will notice.”
These kinds of thoughts or ideas can seem to be true, at least in some situations. When you create something excellent, people are likely to notice and acclaim it. But depending on being “perfect” for approval is a self-defeating belief.
In his book Perfecting Ourselves To Death, Richard Winter quotes psychologist Don Hamachek about making a distinction between unhealthy and healthy perfectionists, who can derive pleasure from painstaking efforts and feel free to be less precise when appropriate.
They can enhance their self-esteem, take pleasure in their skills, and appreciate doing an outstanding job.
So another part of dealing with perfectionism is to pay attention to how you feel when striving to be perfect, and when you “fail” to get there at times.
It may not be easy to let go of stress around perfectionism, but it can benefit your life in many ways.
Actor Faye Dunaway has said she has learned to stop being so controlling, but agrees it can be a very hard thing to change. Now, she finds she can more often “sit back and enjoy the ride.”
Director James Cameron disagrees with being labeled a perfectionist: “No, I’m a greatist. I only want to do it until it’s great.”
That is something we can all do: take pleasure in making it great.

Cooking Beef For Dinner
When cooking meat, one can use two types of heat: dry or wet. Grilling, sautéing, broiling, roasting, deep frying, and stir frying all use dry heat. Pot roasting, stewing, braising, steaming, slow cooking, and poaching use wet heat. The type of heat is chosen depending upon the part of the cow that you are cooking. Since the center of the cow is not used for much activity, these steaks are very tender, so they are best cooked quickly in dry heat. However, areas used for movement tend to be stronger and thus are best cooked in wet heat for a long time.
When cooking meat, there is a two stage process. In the first stage, Maillard reactions form a crust on the cut of meat. In the second stage, the meat is cooked slowly throughout at a low temperature. Therefore, if you are grilling, divide you grill into two parts. One part place more briquettes than the other side to make it extra hot.
First place the steak on the hot portion of the grill to form the crust. Then move the steak to the other side of the grill to cook at lower temperature for a longer time. For a roast, you can cook it at a low heat for long time, and then finish by turning on the broiler to make the crust crisp. If you are cooking beef in a pan, make sure it is preheated to an appropriate temperature.
Cooking beef is a balancing act. You want to reduce moisture loss while cooking long enough that collagen melts into gelatin. While creating a crust is great for flavor, it does not keep the juices in the cut of meat. The only way to retain the juices is through slow coking at low temperatures.
Marinades have acid in them that help to denature the proteins in the meat. This makes the meats tender while adding flavor.
While marinades do not work miracles, they do help a tougher piece of meat becomes more edible.
After cooking the beef, it is important to let it stand. The water will squirt out of the meat if it’s cut immediately resulting in juices being lost. However, if you wait for five to ten minutes, the water will redistribute and less water is lost when cutting.

McGladrey Team Championship Raises More Than $175,000 for Special Olympics Golfers

As part of the third annual McGladrey Team Championship , RSM McGladrey , one of the nation’s leading tax, accounting and business consulting firms, presented a check for $ 175,725 to Special Olympics to benefit the organization’s golf program.
Special Olympics is the official charity of The McGladrey Team Championship, a nationwide amateur championship that brings together amateur golfers and PGA professionals from across the country for a one-of-a-kind grassroots competition. The year-long event culminates in the fall with a National Championship at the renowned Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
“The McGladrey Team Championship is all about teamwork,” said RSM McGladrey President C.E. Andrews. “That spirit of teamwork led us to name the Special Olympics golf program the official charity of our Championship. The $ 175,725 raised through this year’s McGladrey Team Championship silent and live auctions, Local Qualifying Event entry fees and other McGladrey-sponsored fundraisers will give Special Olympics golfers across the nation opportunities to enhance their game, play alongside some of the world’s best golfers and illustrate that with the right team, anything’s possible.”
PGA of America President Jim Remy reinforced the importance of working together.

During this year’s National Team Championship, LPGA Tour Professional and Team McGladrey member Natalie Gulbis assisted with the live and silent auctions, which raised nearly $ 35,000 for Special Olympics golf program. Items bid on during this year’s auctions included a guitar autographed by Sheryl Crow, PING golf clubs, a basketball autographed by Larry Bird, a Great Wolf Lodge family get-away package, a jersey autographed by Peyton Manning and numerous other unique items.

Visiting Southern Snowdonia: Ten Things To Do In And Around Dolgellau

The pretty market town of Dolgellau in Southern Snowdonia is situated at the foot of Cader Idris, one of Snowdonia’s best-loved mountains, and is an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia at any time of year.
Dolgellau’s history is long and extremely interesting (download the ‘sense of place’ PDF for more information), and this is one of the reasons that Dolgellau is such a popular place to visit today. But there’s a lot more to the town and surrounding countryside than ancient history, so here are ten things worth doing and seeing next time you visit Dolgellau.
1. Cader Idris
There’s an old saying about Cader Idris: if you spend a night on the mountain, when you come down you’ll either be a poet or a madman. The fantastic scenery on the walk up the mountain includes a wonderful lake – Llyn Cau – near the summit, which according to legend is bottomless and home to a monster. Don’t forget your camera; you’ll kick yourself if the monster surfaces and you miss a great photo opportunity!
2. Quaker Heritage Centre
The establishment of the Quaker community in Dolgellau in the 17th century is an important part of Dolgellau’s history. The Quakers, like many minority religious groups at that time, suffered extreme persecution and this led to the emigration of many Quakers to Pennsylvania. You can find out all about the Quakers, their persecution and their escape to America at Dolgellau’s Quaker Heritage Centre.
3. Coed y Brenin
Dolgellau is a popular base for cyclists, because there are many excellent cycling routes nearby. One of the most popular is Coed y Brenin, which boasts a number of excellent mountain biking routes for all abilities. Even if you’re not a keen cyclist, there’s plenty else to do at Coed y Brenin; excellent walking, a high ropes course, a cafe with wonderful views, and a fantastic adventure playground for kids to tire themselves out on.
4. Ty Siamas
Ty Siamas is the National Centre for Welsh Folk Music, and it’s what we like to think of as a museum with a difference. That’s because it’s all so hands-on: you can try out a number of musical instruments, see a real recording studio, shop for all things musical, and even catch a performance or two.
5. King Arthur’s Labyrinth
King Arthur’s Labyrinth is a fun family attraction in Corris, which is close to Dolgellau. This is another of those ‘attractions with a difference’; here, you’ll hear a number of stories about King Arthur, who according to legend had many connections with the Snowdonia region, but you’ll hear them while you take an underground boat ride. This is a very popular attraction, along with Corris Craft Centre which is on the same site but back above ground; it’s worth combining the two attractions for a really fun day out.
6. Centre for Alternative Technology
The Centre for Alternative Technology, or CAT, is at nearby Machynlleth. This is a really fascinating attraction for all the family, where you’ll learn all about sustainable living and clean technology, organic gardening and building an eco-house. Perhaps the most popular thing to do at CAT, though, is riding the water-balanced cliff railway – one of the steepest in the world.
7. Fishing
There’s plenty of good fishing in the Dolgellau area, with several fisheries managed by the Dolgellau Angling Association. There’s all sorts of fishing available in season; you may be lucky enough to catch sea trout, salmon, brown trout or rainbow trout – but even if you don’t, you’ll still catch a nice day out!
8. Steam railways
See the countryside in comfort, without having to keep your eyes on the road, with a fantastic day out on a steam train. The two closest steam railways to Dolgellau are the Fairbourne Steam Railway and the Talyllyn Railway, both of which are within easy reach of Dolgellau and will take you on breathtaking tours of some of Snowdonia’s best scenery.
9. Golf
Dolgellau Golf Club, set among the spectacular scenery that surrounds Dolgellau, is considered by many players to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Wales. Certainly, positioned as it is beneath Cader Idris, the course is a pretty dramatic one by anyone’s standards; and the views of the Mawddach Estuary from the top six holes are especially breathtaking.
10. Shopping
One of the wonderful things about Dolgellau is the variety of shops. Dolgellau’s shops are mostly small and independent, selling a great selection of outdoor gear, gifts, local produce, textiles and craft supplies. And of course, Dolgellau is still a market town, so look out for the farmers’ market on the third Sunday of each month, and the furniture and household goods auction on the third Thursday of every month. You’re sure to bag a bargain or two!

The drawings in Addaura Cave, considered some of the finest in Sicily, depict well-defined pictures of human beings, some in movement and fine detail. Additional drawings of re-historic age can be found in the lesser known Niscemi, Puntali and Giovanna Caves depicting typical scenes of life experienced over 10 thousand years ago.

Buckeyes To Play Badgers In Big Ten No. 1 vs. No. 2
According to Ohio State coach Thad Matta, the Buckeyes are a much improved team even though they have many freshmen playing for them. With this statement, Matta hopes that the Buckeyes would do well when they take on Wisconsin Badgers in the No. 1 versus No. 2 game between the Big Ten teams.
On January 9, 2007, the Buckeyes lost 72-69 in Madison. 4 of their top 8 players are freshmen, including the 7 foot Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. After this loss, center Oden and point guard Conley have been quick to learn the nuances of basketball and correct their mistakes.
Matta said that the Buckeyes have a lot more experience now. They have played seven Big Ten road games and this has experience has managed to mature the team. VIVAnews – Carissa Putri resmi menyandang status istri Navies bin Abdullah Naif. Sama seperti kebanyakan pasangan pengantin baru, Carissa dan suaminya pun berniat menghabiskan waktu romantis berdua alias bulan madu.
Niat bulan madu sudah ada. Namun, pasangan itu terpaksa menunda beberapa pekan hingga semua pekerjaan dan sejumlah urusan beres.
“Bulan madu mungkin bulan depan, tapi belum tahu mau ke mana. Masih milih-milih tempat, belum tahu juga di dalam atau luar negeri,” kata Carissa, saat jumpa pers usai akad nikah, di Hotel Dharmawangsa, Jakarta, Sabtu, 31 Maret 2012.
Meski harus menunda bulan madu, pasangan yang telah merajut hubungan asmara sejak 3,5 tahun lalu itu tak ingin menunda memiliki anak. Mereka tak sabar ingin memberi cucu kedua orangtuanya. “Untuk momongan mudah-mudahan langsung dikasih,” ujarnya.
Setelah akad nikah, pasangan itu akan melangsungkan resepsi pernikahan. Sekitar 750 undangan sudah disebar di kalangan keluarga, kerabat, dan teman. (art)

College Football Futility Rankings - Week 3 - Musings on Losing
It is still possible to find Ann Arbor, MI on the map. The place does exist and is filled with kind, caring and genuine people who are exceptionally disappointed. Following a 39-7 thrashing to a team called the Ducks, one of American Football’s flagship programs is in the dumper.
Losing is not the sole domain of traditional doormat schools. With the Big House feeling like a morgue, the Oregon Ducks completely dominated the proud Wolverines in their own stadium – effectively winning this game in fewer than 30 minutes. Faced with the prospect of achieving 0-3 with a home game next week against a hungry Notre Dame team, the Wolverine faithful are having trouble with their collective digestive system.
Breakfast on Sunday morning in Michigan was a quiet time – filled with reflection and moral questioning of the higher power. Whether forgiveness of past sins was part of the exercise is a matter of personal practice, but after deep spiritual reflection, the healing process began. And it began with the traditional search for a scapegoat.
Scapegoating may be warranted in this case, but the process is worth noting as a treasured American tradition. Amid reports of Ohio State fans purchasing the team gear of Appalachian State, the inhabitants of the Big House are after a big head to stick on the pike of this losing season. The Michigan coaching staff – with necks firmly on the proverbial chopping block – insisted after the Oregon loss that nothing can keep them down. Well. the ire 109,000 people might. A rebound win against surprisingly winless Notre Dame won’t quite salve the wounds that have opened in the first two weeks of September. Lengthening the odds for a short term fix, the Blue and Maize have to face the Irish without their starting quarterback, who suffered a leg injury.
So as the Canada Geese begin to think about flying south – or looking for a golf course – to spend the winter, the mighty Michigan Wolverines haven’t quite qualified for a place on the Futility Rankings. Last week’s loss to a really small school caused Michigan to exit the AP rankings entirely. Saturday’s loss finds the Wolverines on a rapid transit decent into college football’s third world of teams that want just a taste of what it is to be nationally recognized for football success. One more loss might just find ‘em all the way into Futility’s top ten.
But for now, here is the Michigan Wolverine-free version of the Futility Rankings for Week 3. And watch the Notre Dame Michigan game this week for the best battle of winless teams in half a century. This is what makes losing as interesting as winning – watching who can come back and who just keeps flailing away in the waters of hopelessness.
1. Duke
Having hit midseason form in it’s second game, the Bluish Devils are solidly on their way towards a repeat of last year’s perfectly futile (and winless) season. Losing to Virginia 24-13 gets the Devil’s ACC season off to a shining start. After clawing to within a couple points at 17-13 in the third quarter, the Devils regrouped to give up a fourth quarter touchdown to seal the loss. The Blew Devils now look forward to a trip to Evanston and a game against Northwestern. The Wildcats handled their early season well earning wins against Northeastern and Nevada, so they are looking for a third tune up game before opening the Big 10 season. Still, Duke has a shot in that the Wildcats might just be looking past ‘em to Northwestern’s September 22 date at Ohio State. If Duke fails here, it might be another three years before they can post a win over a football school.
2. Iowa State
The big surprise of the 2007 season is the rapid decent of the Iowa State Cyclones into second position. This is really turning into a banner year for the Cyclones and opens up the possibility of two perfect seasons going 1-2 in the final rankings. This is a school from the powerhouse Big 12 that has achieved the impossible by losing to both Kent State and Northern Iowa in consecutive weeks. The best hope for Iowa State rests on September 22 with a game against Toledo. Most schools that find their way into the Futility Rankings are heavily focused on basketball. Iowa State is focused simply on losing.
3. Syracuse
A trip to the heartland brings respect for those that work so hard feed this great nation. Seeing farmers hard at their work inspires the soul and calls all Americans to be better people. If you are a football team, a trip to the heartland can bring about an inspiring and humiliating loss. Syracuse held up it’s end of this deal on Saturday by dutifully showing up to get whacked 35-0 by the Iowa Hawkeyes. This game was not as close as that score might indicate. The Hawkeyes walked up and down the field and couldn’t even give up a mercy field goal. Are the Hawkeyes that tough?
This does set up an interesting match this Saturday, though as the Orange continue their waltz through the Big 10 by hosting Illinois. In these dances, the other teams usually lead. The Orange lose this one and they stand to challenge for the Futility title.
4. Vanderbilt
The Vanderbilt Commodores were snuffed at home by Alabama this past Saturday, earning them a jump to #4. A trip to play Vandy usually results in a side-trip to one of Nashville’s better music establishments and provides much needed ‘down-time.’ The SEC won’t ever bounce Vandy out of the league for not being serious because everyone needs a break now and then. Besides, Hawaii is already in a conference. Up next for Vanderbilt is a home game against Ole Miss. Miss this one and Vandy is solidly entrenched in Futility’s worst five.
5. Stanford
In a perfect follow up to their opening day loss to UCLA, the Cardinal gave football fans a break on Saturday by not playing. But look for Stanford to slide down the Futility Rankings should they come out and give – Oregon – a game on the 22nd. The Ducks though, are fresh off skewering once proud Michigan and unfortunately for the Cardinal, should have the sense to take this game seriously.
6. New Mexico State
How does a team score 38 points and still lose? Besides the obvious ‘no defense’ answer, well.. there is no other answer. The Aggies just ain’t ‘got it.’ After giving up a game’s worth of points in the 2nd half, the Aggies were cooked and the University of New Mexico sent it’s crowd home happy with a victory over their in-state rival. If they live in Albuquerque, it was the least they could do.
7. Illinois
The whimpering ones managed a resounding 21-0 victory against Western Illinois. When your program is in doubt, the administrative types schedule games against small, in-state schools. Unfortunately, for Illinois, the ‘Leathernecks’ of Western IU, kept it close for a half. When the Illini found a running game, it was over.
Playing small in-state schools is a disturbing trend. Sort of like NASCAR where a teammate can help you win, Illinois looked for a much weaker opponent to get well. The home state schools help out by sending a bunch of the student body to play football against the bigger school. This is about the only case that can be made for paying players at the college level. If you are going to humiliate yourself in front of your state’s football fans, you deserve to be paid. Ohio State opened it’s season against superpowers Youngstown State and Akron with the expectation that these games would somehow help. At least the Illini opened against Missouri. The Champaign boys now get a trip up to NY to play Syracuse. After double checking their directions, the blue & orange have a shot if they can find the locker room.
8. Army
Following the opening game loss to supreme power Akron, Army fought back to claim a 14-7 victory over Rhode Island last Saturday. On deck for the Knights is defending ACC Champ Wake Forest who comes off a smarting loss to Nebraska. Playing a hungry team is never a good sign if you are trying to break a losing streak, and Army is playing this one on the road.
9. North Carolina
The Heels pulled off an upset on Saturday with a 34-31 victory over East Carolina. One more win and the Baby Blues are gonna get bounced right out of the top ten. But they have a solid chance to retain their coveted spot with a Saturday date with Virginia. The Cadavaliers swatted down Duke last week and are looking to mop up a win against yet another basketball school.
10. North Carolina State
A warm and hearty greeting and welcome to the Wolfpack of North Carolina State! Welcome to their first appearance in the hallowed pages of futility. Starting the season 0-2 is no dishonor in itself. Michigan and Notre Dame are both 0-2. However the Wolfpack achieved their lofty status, not by virtue of losing to Boston College, but by finding a way to loose to Central Florida as well. The wizards of scheduling are now bringing in Wofford – a school that plays in the same division as Appalachian State and like the Mountaineers are currently 2-0. If this game is at all exciting, then NC State should retain a place in the Futility Rankings and begin making it’s run towards a top five finish.
Honorable Mention
UCONN
With two wins under their belts, there just isn’t room on the list for UCONN – especially when NCState is trying to break in. However, this is a perfect example of a marginally successful program trying to shoot itself in the foot. With wins over Duke and Maine, UCONN now faces the Temple Owls before traveling to Pitt for a game against the Panthers. UCONN did an excellent job crafting the schedule to get their program vertical, get fans interested and put a winning record in the books. Why then did the wizards in the Athletic Department schedule Louisville for homecoming? Invite a bunch of alumni and parents for a big celebration against a top tier school? When you set your fans up for your own knock-out, it is tough for them to take you seriously again. In any event, ‘Sayonara’ for now to the Huskies… we’ll be watching!
Kansas
Jayhawk fans may be delirious over a possible 4-0 start. That is until one looks at the schedule. The Hawks opening schedule began with wins over Central Michigan, SE Louisiana, and are followed by tilts with Toledo and Florida International. Anything other than 4-0 is going to get serious attention.
Michigan
The Sages of Sport invite you to consider what will happen if the Fighting Irish put a good hurt on the boys in Blue. Whatever your football passions, don’t miss this game. Never has there been a more interesting match up between two 0-2 teams. The Wolverines still have to play out the schedule that they thought was the path to January 2 and the BCS pinnacle. Unfortunately, their current trajectory might take them to the Comedy Club.
