Let me tell you in a word why March Madness is an awesome time for basketball fans, passion. When you put together a sport that is loved by millions of people with college students from all over the country who have different levels of skill and different levels of interest, you get the most exciting post-season tournament in all of sports. Watching kids throw their bodies into sports, watching heroes emerge from unlikely places, these are what sports and March Madness are about. Listening to stories about schools like George Mason make it to the final four and upset a number of big programs on the way excited us. Watching teams like Davidson who have transcendent players like Stephen Curry who have slipped through the cracks of major programs and watching them single-handedly take down major programs is part of the beauty of March Madness.
Watching every fifteen and sixteenth seed get excited every time they lead and hearing the raucous atmosphere anytime an upset seems to be brewing is part of the beauty of March Madness. Seeing the passion that comes with college athletics is something that we just don’t see in professional sports. Instead of thinking about their next paycheck or the next season, for many of these kids, this is the last meaningful basketball they will ever play. These all lead to a level of passion that is unequaled on any stage in sports. In case you need any more convincing just remember back to your own college days, imagine training and practicing and traveling in addition to classes and then putting your whole body into a sport tournament that can mean everything to you. For these reasons, I find that March Madness is the best sport tournament in the United States and perhaps in the world.
