Damaging tornadoes fail to materialize in upper Mississippi Valley

The television was tuned to forecasters' dire warnings of an impending storm when Greg Tomlyanobich heard a short burst from a tornado siren blare after midnight Sunday. Then silence.

Tornadoes reported across the Midwest and Plains on Saturday and early Sunday left five people dead in Oklahoma and damaged houses, a hospital, a jail, an Air Force base and other buildings around.

Service said the system spawned at least a "month's worth" of tornadoes in Kansas, about as many as the state normally would see in April.
