The Top Five Best Southern Rap Albums of All Time

The Top Five Best Southern Rap Albums of All Time – And Why

While I was at the Hit Factory Studio in Miami the question was raised as to what is the top five best southern rap records of all time? Without a doubt there is no way possible that anyone can name the top five without there being a huge argument as to why certain albums made the list and why some didn’t. Some people would even say that you can’t narrow the list down to just five records because there are just too many great rap records out there that came from the South and I agree! But for the sake of argument, I made this list based upon how much impact these five records had on the South at that particular time, and what kind of movement did these albums create upon their conception from the magnificent artists who created these “in my opinion” classics. In other words, did these albums change the game so to speak upon their releases? Please study this list intently and you decide for yourself where should these albums be ranked in your category?

1. Ghetto D _By Master P – When this album dropped in 1997 Master P was making the whole country say uhhhhhhh na na na na. This album by far is Master P`s best work of art! There was no part of the country that you could go to where you would not hear this record playing in somebody’s cd player or stereo system or even seeing the video on BET. Ghetto D made everybody want to step their game up because the beats on this album were so contagious and the hooks were so infectious that you just couldn’t deny the impact that this album made. This record solidified No Limit Records as the rap label to be reckon with. Ghetto D sold over 400,000 copies in its first week alone. The album ended up being Master P`s bestseller as of today with over four million copies sold. If this don’t convince you nothing will.

2. Unpredictable _By Mystikal – This was Mystikal`s second studio album but first with No Limit Records and this album was his finest piece of work by far. With production by Beats by the Pound complimenting Mystikal`s uncontrollable flow and quick spit fire delivery, there was no way that this album could miss. This album was released November 1997 and was certified platinum shortly after it’s released. It peaked at #3 on Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. The impact that this album made caught everybody off guard because no one seen this power move by Mystikal and No Limit Records coming. This album for sure was a game changer.

3. The Untouchable _By Scarface – This album was the icing on the cake for Scarface as it solidified him as the master of gangsta rap. The Untouchable really needs no explanation because it speaks for itself. The Untouchable was the first album that Scarface ever made that went platinum. And this record took gansta rap as far as the South is concerned to another level. With songs like “No Warning”, “Southside”, “Mary Jane”, and Smile featuring the late great “Tupac Shakur” (rest in peace), there was no way that this album would not be a classic.

4. Aquemini _By Outkast – This bonified smash hit classic album is nothing short of a masterpiece! This was the album that let everybody know that Andre 3000 is the real deal Holifield. This album was released in September of 1998 and was certified platinum by November of the same year just two months after it’s release and boy oh boy, the rest was history! By July of 1999 Aquemini was certified double platinum by the RIAA. The album Aquemini was ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time in the book version of Rolling Stones magazine. In 1999, Outkast won a Grammy award for best rap performance or duo. Aquemini features classic songs like “Rosa Parks”, “Skew It On The Bar-B featuring Raekwon of Wu Tang fame”, “Aquemini”, and last but not least “Da Art of Storytellin”. This album was definitely ahead of its time.

5. 400 Degreez _By Juvenile – What can I say about 400 Degreez? Certified 4x`s platinum by the RIAA, #2 on the Billboard Charts, and had the whole country mesmerized by the sound of DJ Mannie Fresh. This album came out of nowhere and introduced Juvenile and Cash Money Records to main stream America. You couldn’t turn on the television and watch BET or MTV without seeing the video ” Back That Azz Up” on the TV screen. This record by far is a pop record phenomenon that till this day is considered one of the best southern rap albums of all time hands down.

Whether you agree with my picks for the top five best southern rap albums of all time or not, there is no disputing that the albums on this list are some of the best that the South has ever produced.
